MYSORE is a charming, picturesque city situated in the hill country
of southwestern India in the state of Karnataka. Renowned for the
silk and sandalwood industries and it's many opulent palaces, Mysore
has in recent years also gained recognition as the home of Ashtanga
Vinyasa Yoga, or as it is more commonly known in the west, Power
Yoga. Besides yoga, there are numerous enjoyable ways to pass the
time. The best shopping can be found in silk (which can be bought
straight off the loom in shades that can only be imagined) and
sandalwood products. Silver is also quite inexpensive. Fresh produce,
colourful dyes and exotic spices can be bought at the famous local
Devaraja's Market.

ASHTANGA VINYASA YOGA is an ancient system of yoga practice rediscovered by Krishnamacharya, personal teacher, ayurvedic physician and astrologist to Mysore's Maharaja. Ashtanga means "eight limbs" and refers to the eight principals of yogic philosophy; yama (ethics), niyama (conduct), asanas (postures), pranayama (breath control), pratyahara (sense control), dharana (concentration), dhyana (meditation) and samadhi (super conciousness), as they were set forth in THE YOGA SUTRAS, an ancient text penned by the Hindu sage, Pantanjali. Vinyasa means breath and movement system. It was through Krishnamacharya's teachings that this discipline was refined and promoted by Sri K. Pattabhi Jois, the Guruji of Ashtanga. Another famous pupil is BKS Iyengar who developed The Iyengar Method of Yoga.
